ANSWER Scholarship’s Response to COVID-19

Dear Friends,

Many of our supporters have reached out to ask how ANSWER moms are doing. We’re glad to share our latest news.

ANSWER continues to support our scholars as they complete their college classes at home and plan for next semester. All have children or teenagers at home with the schools closed, which can make completing everyone’s homework a little challenging at the crowded kitchen table.

Some of the moms are worried about their income as employees in many industries face furloughs. It takes determination to be a college student even at the traditional age. But moms in college are dealing with unique pressures now.

By phone, email, video chat, and virtual events, ANSWER staff and mentors are offering emotional support and encouragement to help moms finish their semesters strong. We have partnered with several wonderful resources in the Charlotte community to further support our moms if needed.

Despite the challenges the end of the semester has brought with COVID-19, we are proud to say that we will have eight graduates for the 2019-2020 academic year. We’re looking to next semester, too, as we interview candidates for our class of 2020-21.

In this challenging moment, I look to ANSWER scholars on how to face adversity with courage and resilience. They are the bravest women I’ve ever known.

Women like DeCora Cooper. DeCora struggled financially as a single mom. She and her family were once homeless. But with ANSWER Scholarship and other sources, she transformed her life.

DeCora attended UNC Charlotte full-time while working and raising two children. She earned a B.A. in Sociology and now works for the university’s Office of Undergraduate Education. DeCora says about ANSWER, “It was more than a scholarship. It was more like a family.

ANSWER’s mission is more important than ever. We know some families are struggling right now and want you to take care of your own needs first. But if your finances permit, we hope you’ll donate to ANSWER today.

ANSWER has taken a financial hit in recent weeks. Three major fundraisers for ANSWER have been cancelled as the coronavirus placed restrictions on all of our lives. When we emerge from this crisis, the economy may be more challenging than ever for single moms and other families working hard to build a better life for themselves and their children.

We must help them prepare. Mothers will need a college degree and mentoring from ANSWER more than ever. Help us plan for the Fall 2020 semester and beyond by contributing to ANSWER.

ANSWER has always been very prudent with our resources and put aside money for a rainy day. Even as our nation faces a torrential downpour, ANSWER’s work will not stop. We have come so far and will go farther with your help. When life feels so limited, your gift of $50, $100 or more is a positive step you can take to build up our community.

On behalf of everyone at ANSWER, thank you for standing with ANSWER scholars. We’re grateful for your support.

All my best,

Susan Andersen
